Isaac Bashevis Singer
Isaac Bashevis Singer was born on July 24, 1904 in Radzymin, Poland to parents who were religious Jews. His parents wanted him to make a career a religious scholar so in 1921 he enrolled in rabbinical school, but two years later
he left to work for a Yiddish literary magazine. Even though he chose to be a writer his religious studies stayed with him
as a strong influence on his actions. Isaac while working as a journalist, translator, and proofreader, began to write short
stories on his free time.
In 1935 he had published his first book, Satan In Goray. The same year Isaac immigrated to America with his brother Isaac Joshua Singer. Isaac Joshua Singer is one of the major
Yiddish writers of the twentieth century. He was also the biggest influence on his younger brother.
While living in New York, Isaac Bashevis singer began to write for a Yiddish newspaper called “The Jewish Daily Forward”.
During the 1940s singer published his work
in a number of journals including “The Forward”. Throughout his career he continued to be a contributor and supporter
of “The Forward”, which still remains in existence today.
During the 1940s singer’s reputation
began to grow among the many Yiddish speaking immigrants. After world war two many Jews were killed and Yiddish almost became
a dead language.
In 1950 Singer Produced his first major work
called “The Family Moskat”, which represented a twentieth century polish Jewish family before the war. He soon followed his novel with a series of popular
short stories, which included his most famous “Gimbel, The Fool”.
By the 1970s singer had became a major international
writer. Throughout the 1970s singer wrote dozens of stories that were eventually made into books and published in English
and Yiddish.
In 1978 the highest point in his career singer
won the Nobel Prize in literature. After winning the Nobel Prize singer gained status among writers throughout the world. In 1988 he published “The King of The Fields”.
Singer died on July 24, 1991 at age 87 from a series of strokes.
